Lawmakers Try To Save Traditional Brewster Hayride

BREWSTER – Sparky’s hayrides might return after being put on hold earlier this month.

Parker Williams Jr., 76,  known as Sparky, gives summer hayrides in his 1948 John Deere Model A tractor.

Supporters called state Representatices. Timothy Whelan of Brewster and Sarah Peake of Provincetown.

According to Whelan, the issue came up when Police Chief Richard Koch came upon a state regulation and got in touch.

“Chief Koch reached out to us and expressed concern with Chapter 90 which prohibits people from being in trailers,” said Whelan.

It did not take long for Whelan and Peake to get going on the issue.

“We got right to work with the staff over in the joint committee of transportation, the legal staff, on trying to amend chapter 90 in such a way that it would allow, in certain instances, a slow moving ride,” he said.

A special permit from the board of selectmen would be needed to operate on local roads.

Although chances are good that Williams will be giving rides by next Memorial Day, the bill would have to be approved by both houses of the Legislature and signed by the governor.
