Lieutenant Island House Fire Ruled Accidental

we061216aWELLFLEET – The fire that destroyed a home on Lieutenant Island in Wellfleet over the weekend has been deemed accidental, but the cause of the fire is still unknown at this point.

Firefighters from multiple Cape departments were called to the island shortly after 4:30 p.m. after flames were spotted at the house on 9th Street. By the time crews arrived on the scene, the home was completely engulfed by the fire.

It took crews an hour to knock down the blaze, batting strong winds and a rising tide that made the road to the island impassable. Firefighters had to haul in water from the Marconi site, as there are no hydrants on the remote island.

One firefighter was taken to Cape Cod Hospital to be treated for heat exhaustion. Three dogs perished in the fire. The homeowners were not home at the time of the fire.
