FALMOUTH – A man accused of robbing several homes in Falmouth was convicted in Barnstable Superior Court this week and sentenced to up to 10 years in state prison.

After a four day jury trial, Robert Madigan, 33, was found guilty of unarmed burglary, breaking and entering in the daytime with intent to commit a felony, larceny over $250, valdalism, failing to stop for a police officer, operating to endanger and driving with a suspended license.

Barnstable Superior Court Judge Robert C. Rufo sentenced Madigan to eight to 10 years in state prison followed by 10 years probation.

On October 20, 2013, Madigan, along with co-defendant Ronald Renaud, 37, was found to have taken jewelry and coins from an unoccupied home on Shepard’s Place in Falmouth.

While Falmouth Police were investigating that break-in, they received a call from a concerned neighbor reporting suspicious activity of a man with a flashlight walking around another neighbor’s yard and peering into a home on Tarpon Road.

Madigan and Renaud had cut through a screen slider and destroyed the front door casing of the home but were unable to get in.

Police arrived minutes later and found Madigan and Renaud driving away. Police chased the car until it skidded to a stop and Madigan ran away. Renaud was trapped in the car because of a broken passenger door handle.

Inside the car, police found the jewelry and coins that had been stolen from the Shepard’s Place home. They also found a flashlight and latex glove that had been left in the yard of the Tarpon Road property.

Meanwhile, Madigan had run to a nearby house and asked the homeowners if he could use their telephone. They allowed him to use their phone but once he left, they called police.

Renaud had previously plead guilty to unarmed burglary and several other indictments.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Nicole Manoog and investigated by the Falmouth Police Department, assisted by members of the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Department.
