Mashpee Teachers Approve Pre-Labor Day School Start

sack lunch schoolMASHPEE – It will be an early start to the 2015 school year in Mashpee.

School administrators and the teachers union have agreed to start school before Labor Day, with the holiday falling as late as it possibly can in September this year.

The move is a first for the town, which always starts after the holiday.

Mashpee, like many other towns in eastern Massachusetts, have used up their five allocated snow days this year. If they’re forced to cancel school again this year, school will be in session on Good Friday.

“So we thought that because of the snow day problems we’ve had this year if we could [start school earlier] any days that we could pick up prior to PARCC testing and MCAS testing and SATs and AP exams, we’d like to pick up,” said Mashpee Schools Superintendent Brian Hyde.

“Anyone in education will tell you that you get a lot more done in September than you do in June,” Hyde added.

Earlier this month, Falmouth school officials opted to keep the post-Labor Day start of school for students.
