HYANNIS – Increasing crude oil prices and pump prices continue to show no signs of slowing down one week after the U.S. State Department announced the end of waivers for countries to import oil from Iran.
AAA Northeast reports that the average price for a gallon of self-serve, regular unleaded in Massachusetts increased by a dime over the past week to $2.79.
That price is nine cents lower than the national average and four cents higher than at this same time last year.
“Compared to the beginning of the year, motorists have definitely felt an increasing squeeze on their wallets at the pump,” said Mary Maguire, Director of Public and Legislative Affairs for AAA Northeast. “These increases mean Americans are having to work more to afford to fill up their gas tanks. AAA found that, nationally, Americans must work 22 percent longer than at the start of the year to buy one gallon of unleaded gasoline – that’s 7.3 minutes compared to 5.76 minutes in January.”
Prices on Cape Cod are between $2.73 and $3.05, according to GasBuddy.com.
