Museums on the Green to Host Variety of Historical Talks in June

FALMOUTH – The Museums on the Green is announcing a variety of historical talks scheduled throughout the month of June.

Time-travel through centuries and across continents during the next series of historical talks at the Falmouth Museums on the Green

Joe Yukna, co-founder of the Cape Cod Military Museum, kicks off the month on June 6 with a historical talk, The D-Day Invasion and its Ties to Cape Cod, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Yukna says many people don’t know that in 1941, the 16th Infantry Regiment did a practice landing on Old Silver Beach in Falmouth.  Exactly three years later, the same regiment landed on Omaha Beach, one of the five assault beaches that were part of the D-Day invasion in Normandy. Yukna’s hour-long, illustrated talk reveals other local ties to this infamous day.

While the United States played a decisive role in defeating the Axis powers during WWII, it also contributed greatly to the reconstruction of Europe in the years afterward.  On Thursday, June 27, from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m., author Benn Steil will talk about this important historical period, chronicled in his book: “The Marshall Plan: Dawn of the Cold War.”

In a recent New York Times’ book review, Timothy Naftali called this work “trenchant and timely.” The book, published in 2018, also won the New-York Historical Society’s Barbara and David Zalaznick Book Prize, awarded each year to the best work in the field of American history or biography.

Tony Horwitz’s “Spying on the South: An Odyssey Across the American Divide” takes us back to the 1850’s to follow in the footsteps of Frederick Law Olmsted, then an undercover correspondent for the up-and-coming New York Times.

His first-person dispatches about the lives and beliefs of Southerners quickly became social documents about the pre-War South.  Olmsted would go on to create uplifting public places, like Central Park. Horwitz’s talk is scheduled for Tuesday, June 18, from 7:00 p.m. through 8:30 p.m.

Tom Clavin’s talk (June 6 at 7:00 p.m.) about his book, “The Heart of Everything That is Valley Forge” will appeal to American Revolutionary War history buffs.  And, Randall Fuller’s latest book promises another lively exchange on June 13 at 7:00 pm. “The Book that Changed America: How Darwin’s Theory of Evolution Ignited a Nation” reveals what some of the great minds of the day were talking about in 1860, shortly after this thought-provoking book was published.

Eight Cousins Bookstore co-hosts every “Author Talk” in the series and provides books for purchase and personalization at each event. They’re also available at the bookstore, 189 Main Street, Falmouth and online at eightcousins.com. Talks are held at the Museums’ Cultural Center, 55-65 Palmer Ave. in Falmouth, Admission is $5 Members/$10 Non-Members.
