BOSTON (AP) — The nation’s first and oldest lighthouse station is marking 300 years of warning mariners as they navigate the tricky waters of Boston Harbor.
A summer celebrating the milestone for Boston Light kicks off this weekend with the National Park Service’s ranger-led tours resuming Friday for the season. A big anniversary bash is scheduled for September 14, the date when the original light was lit in 1716.
The lighthouse sits on a small island roughly 9 miles from downtown Boston.
The original light was destroyed in 1776 by British forces fleeing the city during the Revolutionary War. It was rebuilt when the war ended in 1783.
Boston Light is the U.S. Coast Guard’s last manned lighthouse.
The light was closed last year for a $1.5 million face-lift ahead of the 300th anniversary.
