Tobey Hospital Expansion Project Gets $300,000 Donation

WAREHAM – Tobey Hospital in Wareham is set to receive $300,000 for the expansion and renovation of the hospital’s emergency department.

The Tobey Hospital Guild, a non-profit group that raises money for the hospital, pledged the money to the project three years ago. The organization made a $93,000 payment this month to fulfill the pledge two years ahead of schedule.

“We are proud to support Southcoast Health in this vital update to the Tobey emergency department,” said Guild President Elaine Meredith.

“We rely on the generosity of our community in order to bring a lot of the services that we can to the region that we serve,” said Peter Cohenno, the Public Information Officer for Southcoast Health.

The current emergency department sees 35,000 patient visits each year. It was designed to handle about half that number.

“This expansion is much needed,” Cohenno said. “We’re proud of it because it’s an investment in the community of greater Wareham.”

The project is currently in the design phase and still needs final regulatory approval from the Wareham Historic District Commission.
