Permanent Site for ‘Carousel of Light’ Proposed to Falmouth Officials

FALMOUTH – A permanent spot for the Carousel of Light has been proposed to Falmouth town officials.

The Falmouth Board of Selectmen and the School Committee met in early-March to discuss holding the carousel on the grounds of Mullen-Hall Elementary School this summer before moving it to a more permanent location on the west side of the school property.

“We have operated essentially on that same site for the last five years with much success. The school committee has supported us,” said Carousel of Light President Troy Clarkson.

“We have seen over 100,000 riders on the carousel in that time, so it’s really become a family destination. That site has worked out well in terms of parking and safety and its utilization. So, we think we can take advantage of some of those pluses by keeping it on the site.”

The space is currently unused and is expected to be an attractive addition to the adjoining walking path. Plans also call for a sidewalk on Katherine Lee Bates Road leading to a ticket booth.

The site may be in operation by 2020 if it receives approval from the school committee. With the event being on school property for the past six years, the school committee joins the board of selectmen in granting approval.

Clarkson and a task force filled with the organization’s board of directors had been deliberating for over a year to find a permanent site. The Carousel of Light Board of Directors includes selectmen Susan Moran and Megan English Braga, as well of Falmouth Chamber of Commerce President Michael Kasparian.

The Carousel of Light has been operating through a license granted by the school committee as a nonprofit organization. The organization manages a payroll for summer staff while also donating to area schools.
