Barnstable Police Investigating Phone Scam Alert

BARNSTABLE – If the phone number 508-414-7900 comes up on your caller ID, don’t answer it. This number has the Barnstable police investigating a phone scam that has generated a number of complaints from citizens.

The caller claims to have a relative hostage and threatens harm if the recipient does not send money.

They go so far as to have the sound of a screaming woman in the background.

The scammer then demands that the victim purchase prepaid money cards.

They are then instructed to go to a meet location which is changed several times.

The scammer, still on the phone, then demands the numbers on the prepaid money cards that will now be used by the culprit.

The transaction is non traceable.

The suspects in this scam are most likely located outside of the United States according to investigators.

Police are asking that anyone who has fallen prey to the scam contact them.

Once again, the number to avoid is 508-414-7900.
