Public Comment Period on Bridges Study Extended to Nov 15

BOSTON – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is extending the public comment period for the Cape Cod Canal Highway Bridges Major Rehabilitation Evaluation Study to November 15.

The Army Corps held five public hearings this month to get the opinions and recommendations from residents on their proposed plan to replace both the Bourne and Sagamore Bridges.

The public comment period was initially set to conclude on Friday.

The Corps’ recommendation is to replace both spans with new structures built to include four travel lanes and two additional auxiliary lanes, with bike and pedestrian access.

At the end of the public comment period, the Corps will address issues raised by the public and finalize documents leading to a decision.

The Army Corps’ report will also undergo an independent external peer review before producing a final recommendation on whether to replace or continue the repair of the bridges.

The final report will be submitted to Corps headquarters in Washington, D.C. for decision in February 2020.
