Public Meetings Thursday on Mashpee Rotary Improvement Concepts

MASHPEE – A second round of public meetings will be held Thursday in Mashpee to gather input on a rotary corridor study.

Cape Cod Commission and Town of Mashpee staff will present conceptual alternatives for the Mashpee Rotary and its intersecting roadways.

The Mashpee Rotary is a five-leg, major regional transportation node with the intersections of Route 28, Route 151, Great Neck Road North and Great Neck Road South.

Based on feedback received at two listening sessions in the spring, draft alternative concepts have been developed.

The concepts aim to reduce congestion and improve multi-modal accommodations.

“We are looking to really gather some public feedback on what everyone would like to see for the Mashpee Rotary in the future,” said Colleen Medeiros, a transportation engineer for the Cape Cod Commission.

The concepts that will be presented range from a long-term complete replacement of the rotary to short-term improvements such as striping and signing the rotary to make it more user friendly.

“It is a confusing intersection for motorists and non-motorists,” Medeiros said. “We are looking at improving safety for vehicles and for pedestrians because, currently, pedestrians and bicyclists have no accommodations there.”

Medeiros said commission and town staff received great feedback during two listening sessions in April.

“Some people definitely like the rotary and enjoy the holiday lights, which is timely for right now which we are enjoying currently,” she said.

She said there were also challenges brought up, including motorists traveling at high speeds, gauging when to enter and exit the rotary, and a lack of pedestrian and bicycle accommodations, and a lack of pavement markings and signage.

“Everything right now is at the conceptual level. Nothing is set in stone or shovel to the ground or anything,” Medeiros said. “Right now this is a real planning process looking to see what people might want to see in the future.”

Meetings will be held at 2 and 5:30 p.m. at the Mashpee Public Library.

Individuals who would like to provide comments who cannot attend the meetings can do so at the project website at www.capecodcommission.org/mashpeerotary.
