Barnstable Seeking Public Opinion on Short Term Rentals

BARNSTABLE – The Town of Barnstable is looking for year round and seasonal stakeholders to share their opinions on short term rentals.

The town defines a short term rental as “a home or portion of a home (such as a room) that is: rented for stays that are less than 31 days” and is “rented for more than 14 total days a year”.

The town makes a distinction between short term rentals and hotels, motels, lodging houses, or bed and breakfasts, and must be registered with the Department of Revenue in Massachusetts.

They also became subject to a state and room occupancy tax this year.

The town expects the process to take no more than five minutes, and all responses are confidential.

Responses will be used for research purposes to help craft policies on the matter.

They request those interested in the topic fill out an online survey that will be open through November 1.

The survey can be reached via this link, where there is also more information on short term rentals.
