Sandwich Officials End Free Parking at Beach Parking Lot

SANDWICH – The last free beach parking lot on Town Neck in Sandwich started collecting fees last month.

The town’s plan is to eventually install a pay kiosk at the lot, officially known as Beach One, next to the Drunken Seal restaurant.

The parking fee is $20 per day through 4 p.m., the same as the two main Town Neck lots, and is currently being collected by an attendant.

Assistant Town Manager Doug Lapp said a pay kiosk will be used as a pilot program.

“The machines that we are buying are solar powered and they are going to sit on a little concrete pad,” he said. “If after a season, and for whatever reason it doesn’t work, we pick up the machine and use it at a different location at East Sandwich Beach.”

Drunken Seal owner Christopher Wilson is opposed to the fees at the lot and says it will negatively impact his business.

The town has designated several spaces for the restaurant and for cars to park for 20 minutes to overlook the water.

“We are simply just trying to follow the recommendation that the board adopted years ago, which is to increase beach revenue to help sustain the beaches and we think it’s pretty simple,” Lapp said.
