Saquatucket Marina Landside Project in Harwich Port Scaled Back

HARWICH PORT- The Saquatucket Marina landside renovation project in Harwich Port has been scaled back after cost estimates for the preliminary plans came in over budget.

A proposed restaurant has been cut down to a small snack building and a ticket office will now be a small shed.

The adjustments were made to bring costs down to $3 million.

“While the scope of the project has been reduced the overall design is a very good one that meets the charge of the board of selectmen and the objects of the Saquatucket Development Committee,” said Harbormaster John Rendon.

The revised plans will still include a new larger office for the harbormaster, maintenance garage, boardwalks, artist shacks and almost 80 more parking spaces.

“The decision for this site plan was a difficult process that was a balance between what the committee would like to have as compared to what the committee could afford to have,” said Matthew Hart, the Harbor Development Committee chairman.

Selectmen approved the preliminary design in February but the architect’s professional estimator pegged the cost significantly over the amount budgeted for the project.

Town meeting voters will decide on the $3 million project in May.

If the proposed renovations are passed at Town Meeting, the project could be put out for bid this summer with construction work possibly beginning this fall.
