Son of Former Soviet Premier to Speak on Nantucket

khrushchevNANTUCKET – The son of former Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev, Sergie Khrushchev, will be giving a lecture next week at the Dreamland Theater on Nantucket.

Khrushchev, who is a senior fellow at the Watson Institute of International Studies at Brown University, will discuss the Cold War and provide insight into the relationship between his father and John F. Kennedy and how it compares to the current tensions between the US and Russia.

The lecture, which is presented by the Dreamland Theater and the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum, begins at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 5, with a private reception starting at 5:30 p.m.

Tickets for both can be purchased at

The primary focus of the lecture will be on the history of the Cold War.

“I will discuss the nature of the Cold War and the nature of the Soviet-American relations which were not very simple at that time and are not very simple now,” Khrushchev said.

Khrushchev said to fix current tension between the two regions, the leaders must get together and not rely on other administration officials.

“We need these strong leaders who will be able to negotiate directly, not through their secretary of state or ambassadors,” he said. “Like it was with Khrushchev and Eisenhower or Kennedy and Khrushchev, because you have to look in the eyes of your opponent and try to understand what really they want and then express to them what you want and how you can bring these two regions together.”

The moderated discussion will be followed by a question and answer session where Khrushchev expects to be asked about the Cuban Missile Crisis and current relations between Cuba and the U.S.

“I think it was very wise relations to reestablish regulations with Cuba,” he said. “If everything will go in a good direction, Cubans will face the thousands of American tourists that will come there and I think it will make great changes in Cuba and to the Cuban economy and support better Cuban and American relations.”
