Steamship Authority Treasurer Robert Davis Chosen as New GM

Robert DavisWOODS HOLE – The Woods Hole, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Steamship Authority board voted unanimously to hire Robert Davis to replace retiring General Manager Wayne Lamson at a Monday meeting, pending successful contract negotiations.

Davis, who has worked for the Authority since 1986 and currently serves as Treasurer/Comptroller, was interviewed by the board during the meeting.

During that interaction, Davis opened by saying his involvement with the boat service has always been “more than just a job.”

He said the most considerable challenge he will likely face in the next few years will be overseeing the six-year terminal reconstruction project, worth approximately $68 million.

“We have to make sure it is on schedule and on budget, but also to address the service needs while we are operating,” Davis said. “We need to also be able to look beyond this issue and secure resources for improving daily operations.”

Davis said he would be keen on investing in the repair and maintenance of vessels and facilities, establishing a system which mandates a consideration of fleet options every 6 to 7 years.

He said he also wishes to establish a plan for improved customer service, utilizing current technology to get notices regarding schedules out to the public in a more comprehensive way.

Davis was praised by the board for his extensive preparation of financial statements in accordance with governmental regulations.

He will take over when Lamson retires in June 2017.

The authority will now begin a search to hire a new Treasurer/Comptroller.
