Sandwich Schools Could Face Budget Cuts

SANDWICH – The Sandwich School Committee has scheduled a public meeting to discuss the budget proposal for fiscal year 2020.

The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday in the Town Hall Auditorium at 7:00 p.m.

The committee has been advised by Superintendent Pamela Gould that if annual spending continues to increase by 2.5-percent annually, that layoffs would be a possibility.

In previous years, staff were able to be moved into positions left open due to retirement. Only three retirements are on the horizon in coming years.

Gould said that other expenditures and district programs have been cut back as much as possible, and that staff cuts are the next item on the chopping block.

The district’s budget will rise from $33.3 million to $34.2 million this year. Staff cuts would total about $220,000.
