South Shore CAC Preparing for Takeover of Cape Cod Child Development Services

PLYMOUTH – Cape Cod Child Development made the decision in late August to cease operations of all its programs due to a lack of sufficient revenue.

That prompted South Shore Community Action Council to step in to provide early education services at all seven child care locations previously operated by Cape Cod Child Development.

“We’ve made pretty good progress, we haven’t had too many bumps in the road,” said Jack Cocio, CEO of South Shore Community Action Council.

On Monday, October 7th, SSCAC will open five of the seven sites previously owned by CCCD and depending on enrollment, the other two locations could be opened in the near future.

“We’ve been able to do a number of leases with some of the locations that were already in existence,” said Cocio.

“Probably five of the seven sites we will be able to open and then we will see how it goes with enrollment, we might be able to open the other two sites as well shortly thereafter.”

SSCAC is using this week as preparation as they get ready to take over the Cape Cod locations, which includes training and orientation for new employees.

“Cape Cod Child Development has been in business and has been taking care of the children and families through this past Friday, so they’ve pretty much closed up shop as far as child care is concerned,” Cocio said.

“We just needed this particular week to get the sites ready, to finish the hiring process, and have orientation for the new employees. Some of the employees obviously were employed with CCCD. They have to go through orientation, we have to get the sites ready for the children and then we’re ready to enroll.”

While the transition has faced a few bumps in the road, enrollment is lower than SSCAC had expected.

“The existing enrollment is much lower than you would want, obviously not close to full enrollment because a lot of things have happened,” Cocio said.

“We’re ok, we are ready to handle that and deal with that. We think a number of families will definitely come back when we can get them enrolled.”

CCCD has been helpful during the transition period, Cocio said, as they put up notices in their former sites to let families know about the SSCAC’s plans to take over the Cape Cod locations.

Cocio also said the South Shore Action Council wanted to jump in and help families on Cape Cod after CCCD ceased operations and the Council looks forward to helping children and families across Cape Cod.

SSCAC has over 200 kids currently enrolled in their two off Cape locations, in Marshfield and Plymouth.
