FALMOUTH – Another candidate has announced his intent to run for Vinny deMacedo’s Plymouth/Barnstable State Senate seat.
Thomas Moakley of West Falmouth declared that he is running last week.
He becomes the fourth Democrat to join the race, after Becky Coletta of Pembroke, a lawyer and town planning board chairwoman, Plymouth Selectman John Mahoney, and Falmouth selectman Susan Moran.
Moakley said he is running to provide a new perspective to area-based issues such as the opioid crisis, diverse job opportunities, and infrastructure built for climate change.
“I think it’s time for my generation to stand up and fight for the future that we want. I’m interested in, kind of, bringing a new generation of leadership to Beacon Hill,” he said.
Moakley, the great-nephew of U.S. Representative Joe Moakley, is currently on a leave of absence from the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.
He does not have any experience as an elected official. However, he argues his time spent as a volunteer in his community gives him an advantage.
“People in Falmouth are aware that I’m no stranger to being the youngest person in the room. But, I want to be in the room,” he continued.
Moakley joined Republican Jay McMahon in entering the race last week. Vinny deMacedo is not seeking re-election after accepting a position with Bridgewater State University.
Moakley has not yet scheduled a formal announcement event for his campaign, but he plans on holding one this month.
