Town Repair of Private Roads Begins This Fall in Barnstable

road construction02BARNSTABLE – A major project to repair four main private roads in the town of Barnstable will begin and be completed this fall, according to Barnstable Town Manager Thomas Lynch.

The Barnstable Town Council voted approval earlier this month using $700,000 in town funds to repair four heavily-traveled private roads in town.

It would be the first time town money has been spent to repave private roads. The town had to get special permission from the state legislature for the project to go forward.

“Last fall, the town council had passed the submittal of legislation to the state house to confirm that we would be able to use public money on private roads, provided there were certain conditions met,” Barnstable Town Manager Thomas Lynch said about the project earlier this month. “What you had to determine is that the road had been in common usage by the general public for at least 20 consecutive years for travel directly from one public road to another public road. You also had the additional requirement that they were in disrepair, that there were issues of safety for the general public in traveling over these private roads.”

The four roads are Mary Dunn Road in Barnstable Village, Wakeby Road in Marstons Mills, High Street in West Barnstable and a section of Old Strawberry Hill Road in Centerville.
