Truro Weighing Options After Overwash at Ballston Beach

Snow on the BeachTRURO – Recent storms have the town of Truro looking at the future of Ballston Beach, where the dunes have been breached by waves during this winter’s storms.

The town replaced the sand at the beach after an overwash occurred in 2013, but that option does not appear to be an option this time.

Instead, the town is considering taking no action.

“I think there’s strong consensus on the board of selectmen that we need to let Mother Nature take its course and stop intervening,” said Truro Board of Selectmen Chairman Jay Coburn.

Coburn said that could eventually result in a partial or complete loss of the parking lot at the beach but it would result in a restoration of natural water flow, which would help prevent flooding.

“The dune will continue to recede, just as the entire shoreline has over hundreds of years has been receding, and the dune can naturally build itself up without man-made interventions,” Coburn said.
