Voters in Dennis Approve Funding for Town Landmarks

DENNIS – Dennis voters approved a number of funding articles on the warrant at Special Town Meeting on Tuesday night that were dedicated to restoring historical town landmarks.

Two grants, including $47,500 for a new roof at the Cape Cinema and $250,000 for new shingles on the west side of the Cape Playhouse, were approved by voters.

A $343,000 funding article to conduct restoration work on the 230 year old West Schoolhouse on Whig St. also was approved at Special Town Meeting, which took place at the Nathaniel H. Wixon School.

An article that allocates around $50,000 to finance repairs to Scargo Tower was approved at Special Town Meeting.

The tower has been closed for about a year after town officials said there were safety concerns and graffiti needed to be cleaned up.

Dennis DPW Director David Johansen said that with the article passing, work on the tower can start soon with plans to re-open the tower by the end of the year.

Voters also approved an article to increase the town’s local rooms occupancy tax from 4 to 6 percent, with the additional revenue going to fund wastewater infrastructure.

There were 17 articles on the warrant.
