Yarmouth Clarifies No Dogs Allowed on Beaches

Dog BeachYARMOUTH – Yarmouth Deputy Police Chief Steven Xiarhos said he feels the need to clarify the town’s policy about dogs on beaches because of a number of recent inquiries.

The Town of Yarmouth Leash Law states that dogs are not allowed on the town’s beaches and must be on a leash when in public.

The Town of Yarmouth does not allow dogs on beaches at any time throughout the year, Xiarhos stated.

As for leashing and restraint, Xiarhos referred to the town bylaw, stating, “Any person owning or keeping a dog shall not allow it to run at large in any of the streets or public places in the Town of Yarmouth or upon premises other than the premises of such owner or keeper, unless the owner or lawful occupant of such other premises grants permission therefor.”

The bylaw continues, “No dog shall be allowed in any public place or street within the Town unless it is effectively restrained and controlled by a chain or a leash or unless it is confined within a motor vehicle.”

Xiarhos stated that this section of the bylaw does not limit or prohibit the use of hunting dogs during the hunting season for the conducting of field trials for hunting dogs.
