YARMOUTH – Yarmouth Deputy Police Chief Steven Xiarhos is serving his last week with the Yarmouth Police after 40 years on the job.
His retirement was announced by Chief Frank Frederickson last month.
“It’s bittersweet, you know?” Xiarhos said.
“It’s hard to leave a job and the people you love.”
Xiarhos was born in New Bedford and is an alumni of Anna Maria College, Northeastern University, and Cape Cod Community College where he majored in Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement.
He joined the Yarmouth Police Department as an 18 year old in 1978 and became a full time officer at 19.
Some of the positions he has served throughout his career include patrol officer, detective, school resource officer, patrol sergeant, lieutenant, and patrol force commander.
Xiarhos submitted paperwork in October for a possible run for the 5th Barnstable State Representative District, but is expected to make a formal announcement after his retirement.
“It’s all about the people that we work with. I get to work with heroes. That’s pretty special,” said Xiarhos.
“And even more, the people in the community have really been so good to me—not only in the policing world, but through the loss that we suffered with Nicholas, my son, in Afghanistan, Cape Cod has shown their love and support. It’s a special week for us,” said Xiarhos.
His last official day on the force will Friday, December 6 before his retirement on his 61st birthday, Sunday, December 8.
