HYANNIS — Some local tennis fans have lost track of how many times over the years that the Boston College High School’s boys’ tennis team has spoiled a perfect Barnstable High season.
But Friday afternoon the spectre of Eagles’ teams past was exorcised as the host Red Raiders defeated the BC High boys and decisively so, 5-0.
“The boys really stepped up and played amazing tennis today,” said Barnstable head coach Mike Sarney.
Still unbeaten at 13-0, the Red Raiders’ top three singles players — Sonny Bisazza, Tyler Shibles and Max Francis — each turned in dominating performances to pace the match. Bisazza, who’s been sidelined for two weeks, took down the number one singles’ slot like he hadn’t missed a single day, as he defeated junior Caye Tittmann, 6-2, 6-1. Shibles, who will be playing Saturday as the number one in the MIAA South Sectional individual tournament, and some say is interchangeable with Bisazza, defeated junior Bailey Ward at number two singles, 6-2, 6-2. Francis, only a sophomore, was even more efficient than his predecessors, as he defeated sophomore Aidan Dale, 6-1, 6-0.
It was the number one doubles match, though, that turned into a real battle for net supremacy.
Barnstable’s Donnie Brodd and Cooper Blaze squared off against Sam Lahart and Justin McGaffigan — both juniors — and the gloves came off. Brodd and Blaze defeated the BC High number one doubles duo, 7-6 (7-3) and 7-6 (8-6) in one of the hardest fought matches seen this season.
At number two doubles, Cooper Hesse and Daniel Dettinger-Klemm made it a clean sweep with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Michael Bridgeman and Pablo Ierreyra.
The Red Raiders next face Dartmouth on Monday at home at 4:00 pm and have four regular season matches scheduled, two of which, including Dartmouth, are league matches.
Barnstable Red Raider Girls Prove Too Much for Cape Cod Academy Seahawks
Missing some key players, Cape Cod Academy knew it had its hands full Friday when the powerhouse Barnstable High girls came across town for a Friday afternoon match.
The Red Raiders made sure that worry came to fruition with a 5-0 shutout to raise their record to 12-2 on the season, while the host Seahawks fell to 5-9.
Lauren Persson and Katie Tynan won their matches by the same score — 6-0, 6-0 — as they defeated Nell Thornton and Noelle Benoit at number one and number two singles, respectively. Barnstable’s Emma Doe took third singles from Marina Gardella, 6-1, 6-0.
In number one doubles action, Taya Berler and Michaela Cornwall defeated Claire Punta and Olivia Doe, 6-1, 6-0, and Caroline Young and Angelique Gray beat Amber Wang and Jesse Cordero at number two doubles, 6-0, 6-0.
Barnstable heads to Dartmouth in an Old Colony League match on Monday at 4:00 pm. Cape Cod Academy welcomes the tough Nauset Warriors team on Monday at 4:30 pm.
Tough Monomoy Girls Blank St. John Paul II, 5-0
On the heels of turning in a gutsy match against the undefeated Vineyard girls’ tennis team on Thursday, the St. John Paul II Lady Lions ran straight into a buzzsaw Friday afternoon when they faced the 12-1 Monomoy Sharks.
The Sharks blanked the host St. John Paul II girls (5-9), 5-0, at the Dick Norman Courts in Marstons Mills.
At number one singles, Monomoy’s Carly Donovan defeated Haylee Whiteley, 6-1, 6-2, followed by Abby Burke over Emily Canzano, 6-1, 6-2. Olivia Burke fared equally as well for the Sharks as she defeated the Lady Lions’ Allison Santos at number three singles, 6-2, 6-4.
“Haylee, Emily and Allison all faced strong opponents at the top three singles positions,” said St. John Paul II head coach Katie Dombrowski. “Their efforts and tenacity on the court never waned.”
In number one doubles action, Caley Street and Lilly Gorman defeated St. John Paul II’s senior co-captain Jacqueline Germani and senior Julia Grady, 6-2, then Germani and Grady stepped up and won the second set, 6-1. The Monomoy top duo prevailed in the third set, 7-5, to take the victory. At number two doubles, Monomoy’s Heidi Friedel and Jessica Wilson defeated Grace Sohoel- Goldberg and Megan Moran, 6-2, 6-0.
“Jacqueline and Julia had an incredible match at first doubles,” Coach Dombrowski said. “After losing the first set, they came back to win the second. Down in the third 5-1, they managed to bring the final set to 5-5 before losing in an amazingly fought battle, 7-5. Their dynamic and power on the court were incredible.”
St. John Paul II plays again at home on Monday against Dennis-Yarmouth.
