Bourne’s Three Kings: Davis, Prophett and Lacasse Sink Whalers

BOURNE – If anyone was itching to get back on that ice this week, it was Bourne High junior netminder Jack Lacasse.

And boy did Lacasse produce.

The goalie notched his first-career postseason shutout and made 20 saves as he helped the Canalmen eliminate the visiting Nantucket Whalers, 2-0, last night in the MIAA Division 3 Boys South Sectional first round.

All the offensive ammunition the Canalmen would need to sink the Whalers was a second period goal from senior defenseman Jacob “The Big Man” Davis who made it 1-0 on assists from Austin Braley and Mitchell Eldridge at the 12:59 mark.

Bourne took that 1-0 lead into the third frame, and junior forward Dawson Prophett ensured the lead would hold when he made it 2-0 just 1:23 into the period. Senior forward Jared Butler and junior defenseman Billy Conway assisted.

The 8th-seeded Canalmen now stand at 13-5-3 on the season and Nantucket’s season is concluded at 12-7-1.

Bourne will face Division 3 #1-seed Norwell on Tuesday (March 3) at the John Gallo Ice Arena at 8:00 pm.

According to Bourne High head coach Tom Welch, this was the first postseason win for the Canalmen since 2009.

“I think both teams were a little nervous coming into this game,” Welch said. “But in the second period things began to pick up and it was one hell of a third period.”

Bourne committed four penalties on the night, while the Whalers committed just two.

their teammates to raise $1,115 in funds for Bourne Police Officer Jared MacDonald who is in Boston recovering from a gunshot wound he sustained on February 5.

Last year, the Canalmen received an MIAA Community Service Award and Coach Welch said his boys are no different this year, always reaching out to help people in the town they love so dearly. That love and appreciation, Coach Welch said, is reciprocal.

“The community has truly supported the team,” Coach Welch said. “I could not be more proud of them. That’s the real story tonight.”
