FALMOUTH – Even without their beloved coach for a day, the Falmouth Academy Mariners know how to get the job done.
Backed by a combined 35 points from Eliza Van Voorhis and Kendall Currence, the Mariners ran away with a 55-21 victory last night at home over Sturgis West and in the process captured at least a share of the Cape & Islands League championship title.
Falmouth Academy head coach Gus Adams – an esteemed, longtime member of the Cape Cod basketball community – had to sit out last night’s game after being ejected from his team’s loss Tuesday to Mashpee. Player and coach ejections carry with them an automatic one-game suspension under Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) rules.
Regardless, Adams’ girls shined brilliantly as Van Voorhis dumped in a stellar 18 points with freshman phenom Kendall Currence right behind her at 17 points for the night.
Sturgis West’s Becca Rowe had a team-high 13 points in the effort.
The Navigators were held scoreless in the first quarter by the host Mariners as the hosts rattled off a quick, 15-0 first quarter lead. Currence accounted for 12 of those 15 first quarter points.
By halftime, Falmouth Academy built an insurmountable, 26-5 lead.
In the third frame, the Mariners offered their guests one more deluge of points countered by a stifling defense and had built a 47-12 lead, backed by an eight-point third quarter from Van Voorhis.
Sturgis West’s Shannon Crowley added five points to her team’s effort, but it was not nearly enough as the Mariners closed things out in the fourth en route to the 55-21 finale.
Falmouth Academy hits the road tonight to Kingston to face Sacred Heart at 5:00 pm in its last regular-season game. Sturgis West (5-7) has at least a post-blizzard game or two to make-up but its chances of making the postseason were greatly reduced by the loss.
Currence is averaging 19.9 points per game, the second-highest varsity girls basketball game average in the state. Van Voorhis is averaging 13.0 points per game. Currence and Van Voorhis are ranked number one and two in the Cape & Islands League in points per game.
