MASHPEE – Down 5-3 after five innings Saturday afternoon against the Sturgis East Storm, the host Mashpee Falcons came back to score three runs in the bottom of the sixth and made a winner of junior southpaw Jason Demers, 6-5.

Demers went the distance, allowing five runs in the fifth inning to the visitors, but he settled to retire the Storm in succession in the sixth and seventh frames. He scattered seven hits, walked three and sruck out three batters en route to the complete-game win. He threw 98 pitches in the effort.

Sturgis East’s Kyle Coolidge turned in six innings of work, allowed six runs (four earned), struck out eight but issued six walks. He gave up five hits which were compounded by a pair of errors.

“(It was a) tough loss. Walks killed us,” Sturgis East head coach John Havey said. “(We) wanted this one badly. (The) kids played well. (I’m) proud of the effort.”

Mashpee jumped on Coolidge for a pair of runs in the first inning for a quick, 2-0 lead, while Coolidge did not allow a single hit in the frame. He walked leadoff man Zach Landry, Ari Purdy reached on an infield error and both men ended up scoring.

The game remained at 2-0 until the top of the fifth inning when Sturgis East came roaring back with a five-run rally on hits by Cooper Gavin (2-4), Coolidge, and doubles by Jared Joy and Seamus Devine. It was Devine’s first career varsity hit – a two-run double – after being called up from the JVs this week.

Mashpee added one in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it 5-3 when Landry smacked a two-out single and then came home on a Mike Fraser RBI-triple.

The Falcons got all they would need for the win in the bottom of the sixth inning on a leadoff walk issued to Alex Morey, singles by Nick Carpenter and Dan Crowley, a walk and an RBI-double by Eddie Childs.

Mashpee is slated to play three South Shore League contests this week, starting with Monomoy at home on Monday (April 27) at 4:00 pm.

Sturgis East gets back into action on Tuesday (April 28) at Cape Cod Academy at 4:00 pm.
