SJP II Lions Make Quick Business of Falmouth Academy Mariners

HYANNIS — On the heels of staging a major upset over the visiting Nantucket Whalers Saturday, the St. John Paul II Lions wasted little time last night picking up back-to-back wins.

The Lions (8-4) welcomed the Falmouth Academy Mariners to the St. Francis Xavier Preparatory School gymnasium and quickly dispatched the guests, 57-37.

Junior Jonny Warden led all scorers on the night with 12 points, followed by freshman guard Devan Harrison who had 10 points and Cole Campbell who had nine points.

Falmouth Academy’s Robert Eder led the Mariners with 11 points, followed by Owen Sullivan with nine and Kunaal Rajagopel with seven points.

The Lions jumped out to a quick, 18-9, first quarter lead, with Kevin Marsh and Warden each tacking on five points to pace the Blue & Gold attack. The host Lions used an aggressive inside penetration plan to build the lead so quickly. All totaled, the Lions went 7-10 from the free throw line in the first quarter and went 15-23 throughout the game from the stripe. It was enough of an effort at the line to spell the difference in this affair and helped set up such a large and insurmountable advantage for the Lions.

By halftime, the Lions’ lead had climbed to a 33-20 margin and after three quarters of play, the score was St. John Paul II 49, Falmouth Academy 28.

The hosts remained fairly consistent throughout the affair except in the fourth frame when the Lions scored just eight points while the Mariners had nine fourth quarter points.

St. John Paul II will head to Plymouth tomorrow to face the Rising Tide Charter School at 4:00 pm.

Falmouth Academy (4-9) next faces Cape Cod Academy in another Cape & Islands League contest on Wednesday, Feb. 4, at 5:30 pm.
