Unbeaten Vineyard Tennis Girls Shock Powerhouse Red Raiders

OAK BLUFFS – It’s been five years since the perennial Division 1 state-title contender Red Raiders dropped two tennis matches in a season, but the still undefeated Martha’s Vineyard girls did just that to their guests from Barnstable High Thursday afternoon, 3-2.

It was also the first time the Martha’s Vineyard girls have ever defeated Barnstable High in girls’ tennis since the inception of the Red Raider girls’ tennis program in 1963.

The Vineyarders remain undefeated at 9-0 with the non-league win, while Barnstable fell to 8-2.

It was Martha’s Vineyard number one singles player Samantha Potter who paved the way for the island girls as she defeated the superlative Katie Tynan, 6-3, 6-3.

Kat Roberts notched win number two at number two singles, beating Barnstable’s Lauren Persson, 6-2, 6-1, followed by Lizzie Williamson at number three singles who collected a win over Emma Doe, 6-0, 6-2.

Barnstable held their heads up proudly with a pair of wins in doubles action, however, with all-scholastics Taya Berler and Michaela Cornwall defeating Charlotte Potter and Josie Iadicicco, 6-2, 6-3. The Red Raiders’ Angelique Gray and Caroline Young ended with a win over Avery Hazell and Madison McBride, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0.

The Vineyard may have its hands full once again on Saturday as it welcomes the very tough Nauset Regional High Warrior girls for a 1:00 pm match in Oak Bluffs.

Barnstable will take its turn to take on the Black and Gold of Nauset on Monday (May 11) at 4:30 pm in Hyannis.

Barnstable Boys’ Tennis Team Remains Unbeaten with 5-0 Sweep of Vineyarders

In contrast to their counterparts, the host Barnstable High boys’ tennis team defeated the visiting Martha’s Vineyard boys (5-4) Thursday afternoon, 5-0, to remain undefeated on the 2015 campaign.

The Barnstable High boys (10-0) got wins in each grouping, with Tyler Shibles defeating Connor Downing at number one singles, 6-2, 6-1, to lead the way.

Sophomore Max Francis continued his torrid pace and easy-going flexibility with a 6-0, 6-4 win at number two singles over the Vineyard’s Zak Danz. Francis has competed and won this season in each of the three singles slots. At number three singles, Cooper Hesse beat Graham Lewis, 6-0, 6-0, to cap off singles match play.

Senior co-captain Donnie Brodd and teammate Cooper Blaze picked up another win at number one doubles for the Red Raiders, and defaeted Donovan Belisle and Charlie Parkhurst, 6-1, 6-0. Daniel Dettinger-Klemm and Gabe Rourke rounded out the sweep with a 6-2, 6-2 win over M-V’s Max Hammond and James Kelliher.

Barnstable will defend its unblemished record on Monday (May 11) at Nauset (Orleans Elementary School). The Vineyard boys welcome Nauset on Saturday at 3:00 pm.
