Vineyarders Stun Barnstable Girls’ Tennis Team in Spring’s First Match

HYANNIS – It was five seasons ago in 2010 the last time the perennial powerhouse Barnstable High girls’ tennis team took a regular-season loss, nevermind on opening day.

It’s been a decade since the Red Raiders fell in their season’s first match (April 1, 2005 against Boston Latin), but that’s precisely what happened yesterday at home against Martha’s Vineyard when the Vineyarders edged the hosts, 3-2, in both teams’ season-opener.

“They were solid at one, two and three singles,” third-year Barnstable High head coach Lou Giglio said. “It’s a wake-up call.”

The Vineyard’s Samantha Potter downed senior Lauren Persson in number one singles play, but it was a battle to the end for certain. Potter took the first game, 7-5, followed by Persson’s victory in the second game, 6-3. The two played in a 10-point tiebreaker to decide the victory and it was Potter who prevailed, 10-8.

Barnstable’s talented Katie Tynan, a junior, took an almost unprecedented loss at number two singles, falling to the Vineyard’s Kat Roberts, 6-0, 6-0.

“Katie is such a talent,” Giglio said. “I don’t know what happened to her today.”

At number three singles, Martha’s Vineyard’s Lizzie Williamson defeated Emma Doe, 6-1, 6-1.

The Red Raiders took both doubles matches, but it was not enough to stave off the upset.

Taya Berler and Michaela Cornwall teamed up to defeat the Vineyard’s duo of Charlotte Potter and Josie Iadicicco, 6-4, 6-1. Angelique Gray and Caroline Young teamed up at number two doubles for Barnstable to defeat the Vineyard’s Avery Hazel and Madison McBride, 7-5, 6-2.
