Barbecue in Falmouth: A Must Try

Barbecue and Cape Cod don’t seem like they belong together, right?

The Cape is known for its fresh, delicious seafood that in some cases, comes right off the boat.

But nestled on Main Street in Falmouth lies Doggz & Hoggz, a gem that has been delighting locals and tourists for years.

Owner Michael Bullard knew that there was a need for barbecue restaurant in Falmouth, so he opened up Doggz & Hoggz in 2013.  “I knew that I wanted to open up a restaurant on the Cape, and no one had an authentic barbecue restaurant in this area,” he said.

Bullard, a native Cape Codder from Falmouth, had been inspired from a young age to open up a restaurant on the Cape.   He knew it was something that he eventually had to do.

Like many Cape Codders, Bullard left the Cape after graduating school to explore other areas.  Eventually, he went to work in Orlando before moving back to the Falmouth area several years later.

“I moved back to take care of my parents and saw the need for something different.  There wasn’t any barbecue options in the area, so a friend of mine and I opened up the restaurant,” Bullard said.

What makes Doggz & Hoggz different is the housemade sauces and relishes. They also don’t serve your typical burger and fries.  They focus on quality and flavor over a larger menu.

Mike described his restaurant as “an All-American with flavor from Hawaii, to Memphis, into North and South Carolina and finally the Cape.  It has a little heat, a little sweet and a little tang.”

That flavor is apparent the moment you bite into one of the southern inspired dishes.

The brisket, which melts in your mouth, is a succulent piece of meat coupled with a fresh Cape Cod Slaw.

“We’re keeping our ingredients fresh and keeping them consistent.  We get as much produce as possible locally.”

An example of this freshness is the slaw, which uses locally grown produce and cranberries that give you the southern taste but with a Cape Cod feel.

But their probably most known for their signature dishes.

The “Pork and Dog” is just one example.  You might be asking what is a “Pork and Dog”, and the answer is an all-beef hot dog topped with pulled pork with house made barbecue sauce on a fresh Portuguese roll.

If you’re looking for more surf than turf, don’t worry.  For those seafood lovers, they offer stuffed quahogs, smoked salmon and lobster rolls.

The best part is that most of the items on their menu come in at $10 or less, making it an affordable meal.

As people flock over the bridge this season, you might want to give Doggz & Hoggz a whirl.
