Updated to include victim identification: Fatal crash on Route 6 in Wellfleet under investigation



WELLFLEET – A major traffic crash was reported on Route 6 at Lecount’s Hollow Road around 6:50 AM Thursday. According to reports a box truck and minivan collided head-on. One person reportedly suffered potentially life-threatening injuries. A second person was transported to Cape Cod Hospital with unknown injuries. All northbound (east) lanes are blocked. Wellfleet Police called for crash reconstruction to respond to the scene.

Update from Wellfleet Police: On Thursday, October 10, 2024, at approximately 6:52 AM, the Wellfleet Police and Fire Departments were dispatched to a report of a motor vehicle crash on Route 6 near the intersection of Lecount Hollow Road in Wellfleet. Upon arrival, it was determined that two vehicles were involved in the accident. A 2006 box delivery truck, operated by a 60-year-old male from Worcester, Mass., struck a 2020 Toyota Sienna van operated by a 63-year-old female from Eastham, Mass. The female driver from Eastham was pronounced dead at the scene, and the operator of the box truck was transported to Cape Cod Hospital with unknown injuries. The name of the deceased party is being withheld pending notification. The Massachusetts State Police accident reconstruction team was called and is investigating. The eastbound lane of Route 6 is being diverted through the South Wellfleet General Store complex until the scene is cleared. The Massachusetts State Police will be the lead investigating agency for this crash.

Update from Wellfleet Police on Friday 11 AM: The name of the deceased is Sheila Kelley from Eastham. Sheila was a well-known resident of the community and will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Sheila owned a flower shop in Wellfleet and touched many lives in various ways. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved.
