New details: Hyannis Fire responds to injury at sea-two people fell overboard

HYANNIS – The Hyannis Fire marine unit responded to a rescue at sea. A person was injured on a sailboat about 3 miles off Squaw Island around 11:30 AM Saturday. A paramedic evaluated the victim who was put on the fire boat and brought to the Hyannis Yacht Club to meet an ambulance. Further details were not immediately available.

From Yarmouth DNR: On Saturday at approximately 11:30 AM, Yarmouth Division of Natural Resources was notified of a medical emergency aboard a 40’ sailing vessel 5 miles south of Squaw Island.

Yarmouth DNR Patrol Boat J48 responded along with Hyannis Fire Boat M1 and Barnstable Harbormaster. Yarmouth J48 arrived on scene and located the vessel. Hyannis Fire was able to transfer a medic aboard the vessel to render aid to the individual.

It was determined that two parties had fallen overboard. One had been retrieved from the water while the other was in for over 20 min unable to be retrieved. Once the second individual was retrieved a possible medical condition developed.

Both were wearing life jackets.

Seas were 4 to 6 feet with winds gusting over 25 MPH. Due to the conditions the sailing vessel was escorted back to Hyannis Yacht Club where an ambulance transferred the two men to the hospital in stable condition.

These two men survived because they were wearing lifejackets.
