Storm coverage: Power outages develop as fierce winds lash the Cape

EASTHAM – A powerful storm lashed the Cape with strong southwesterly winds. Check this article for continuing coverage.

A tree came down in wires knocking out power to 700 Eversource customers in Eastham around 3 PM. Repair crews were on scene along Route 6 at Hoffman Lane to clear the tree so the damage could be repaired.

A short time later another weather related outage had 1,000 customers in Mashpee and 860 in Barnstable without power.

4 p.m. update: Several weather related problems involving downed wires have 1,500 customers without power in Barnstable and 1,900 in Mashpee. Falmouth Police reported a tree down on Waquoit Highway (Route 28) by the Waquoit Congregational Church (above). Elsewhere, 860 customers are out in Barnstable and 620 in Harwich.

5 p.m. update: The National Weather Service reports 65 MPH winds in Eastham, 64 MPH in Dennis, and 61 MPH in Hyannis and West Dennis. About 4,400 Eversource customers on Cape Cod are without power at this hour.

6 PM update: Quite the scene in Provincetown’s east end. The wicked winds stirring up the harbor by Fanizzi’s Restaurant. Despite the scene, owner Paul Fanizzi posted on social media that the restaurant, which is open for takeout, is OK. A tree was reported down on a house on Wellingtree Road in Dennis. At this hour, 2,700 customers are without power in Falmouth with 500 in Mashpee. Provincetown Firefighters are on the scene of a pole and wires fire in the area of  Holway Avenue that reportedly caused a small fire in a house. The fire was quickly put out in the residence but the pole was heavily damaged and it was feared the top of the pole might come down with the primary wires. It was thought they might have to cut power to the whole town but Eversource was able to arrive on scene and isolate the situation leaving only about 90 customers without power. Provincetown Airport reported a gust to 59 MPH.

8 PM update: A tree reportedly fell on the roof of a home on Gould Drive in Brewster around 7:30 PM. No one was injured but officials were working to determine any structural damage. Eversource had cleared many of the earlier outages but as of this writing, 1,200 customers were out in Bourne with 927 in Falmouth. 462 customers were out in Brewster.

9 PM update: Peak gust of 67 MPH in East Falmouth. New outages in Dennis and Brewster affecting about 3,000 customers along with 300 in Wellfleet. There are about 5,500 customers without power on the Cape as of this writing.

11:30 PM update: Most of the larger power outages have been restored. There are still 1,000 customers out in Bourne with 588 in Falmouth.
