YARMOUTH – The Yarmouth Division of Natural Resources will cite three hunters after they were spotted hunting ducks in a closed area Monday morning.

It was just after 8 a.m. when the department was notified by a concerned resident in Yarmouthport of duck hunters hunting near their house.

An officer arrived to the area and within minutes and heard several gun shots. When a backup officer arrived, the officers hiked out through the marsh and made contact with three duck hunters.

While conducting the inspection it was determined that the hunters were hunting in a “closed hunting” area. The hunters had also taken several waterfowl while hunting from this closed area.

The waterfowl were seized as evidence and donated so the meat would not go to waste. The hunters were educated about open and closed areas throughout Yarmouth and then sent on their way.

Citations are pending as officers investigate if further violations occurred.

The Department of Natural Resources said it is the responsibility of the hunters to know where they are and the open and closed areas to hunt.
