What a lovely 4th of July weekend we were blessed with here on the Cape. I hope all of you had a wonderful time with friends and family. We’re off and running now, summer is in full swing, so let’s get right to it!

Music

The lovely Kami Lyle spent her winter performing in Florida, and we’ve missed her! Thankfully, she and her husband, the wonderful Joey Spampinato are back, and this Saturday night you can see her at Cotuit Center for the Arts with one of her, “Kami Lyle Sit-a-While: Real Songs, Real Writers, Fake Fireplace” shows. This time Kami and her band will be joined by Bonnie Hayes and Kimon Kirk. I’ve been to a few of these events and they are always really fun, and full of great music. For tickets and more information just go here!

On Wednesday the Wellfleet Beachcomber will have singer and songwriter, Cal Kehoe. He’s got a great sound that is a bit alt, a bit bluesy and very original. He’s definitely worth the trip East. The ‘Comber is at 1120 Cahoon Hollow Road, Wellfleet.

Payomet in Truro is another of my favorite summer venues. They’ve got a lot of shows coming up this week. You should definitely do yourself a favor and head down there. It’s right near the beach, and it’s a wonderful drive.

On Wednesday is The Duhks—a band from Canada that will surely provide a wonderful evening of music. The show is at 8 p.m.

Lots of music is on the schedule at the Beachcomber this summer.

On Saturday, July 11, at 8 p.m. is the incomparable Marcia Ball. A pianist who’s also a fantastic blues singer, she will be great.

Sunday, July 12 it’s Hot Tuna. You may remember these guys from the ‘60s—a couple of the members of Jefferson Airplane started this band as a side project, and here they are more than 40 years later. This show is also at 8 p.m. Tickets and information are at the link.

Then, on Tuesday, July 14, it’s the one and only Melanie. You might have to be of a certain age to remember this song, “Brand New Key,” from the 1970s. It was a huge hit, and she was and still is a delight. She also performs with her son, musician Beau-Jarred which is pretty cool! For more Melanie information you can go here.

Another very fun music event that happens every Monday in the summer are the concerts on the green at the Windmill Green in Eastham. They’re free, and great for the kids too—they can just run around while you listen to some great local music. This coming Monday, July 13, it’s Sarah Swain and the Oh Boys! If you love some rockabilly and some straight up rock and roll, you’re going to love them. The shows are from 7 to 8 p.m. and the park is right on Route 6 in Eastham. Don’t forget to bring a chair or a blanket!

The wonderfully wonderful (you know and love them from NRBQ) Spampinato Brothers will be playing a free gig as well at Nauset Beach, this Thursday, July 9, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

In Falmouth, Four Guys in Tuxes will delight you with some swing and classic rock, at Peg Noonan Park, also free and from 6-7:30 p.m.

Artist Talk

One of my favorite Cape artists, Suzanne M. Packer is give a talk at the Cape Cod Chat House in Dennis next Thursday, July 16, from 2 to 3. This is a free event.  I find her work to be just lovely. You can take a look for yourself at her website. The Chat House is located at 593 Main St,(Route 6A) Dennis. For more information about the Chat House and other upcoming exhibits you can visit their website.

Movies Under the Stars for the Whole Family

This has to be one of the coolest things to go do during with summer. Every Wednesday night at Peg Noonan Park in Falmouth they have “Movies Under the Stars.”  This Wednesday it’s “The Lego Movie,” and next Wednesday it will be “Annie.” The movies start at dusk—about 8 p.m. This is a free event and so perfect for little kids who might feel restrained at a theater or the drive-in. Brings some chairs, blankets and some snacks for a great family night out!

Story Slam

One of my favorite things is the world is listening to true stories told live a la the podcast, “The Moth.” In this vein, some folks are hosting such an event called “The Mosquito Storyslam,” at the Wellfleet Preservation Hall. The deal is, you know the theme, this time it’s, “Locals.” and you come up with a true story in your head (no writing it out or notes) and you put your name in the hat, and if chosen you get to go on stage and tell your story. It’s happening this Sunday, July 12 at 7:30 p.m. You can buy tickets here.
