What You Need to Know: Pops by the Sea

On Sunday, August 14, 2016 at 5 p.m. the Citizens Bank Pops by the Sea concert is Cape Cod’s single largest cultural event and the most important fundraising event of the year for the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod. For each of the past thirty years we have welcomed one of the nation’s finest and best-loved musical ensembles – the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra – to the Hyannis Village Green.

Cape Cod residents and visitors from across the United States and abroad gather for an iconic evening of classic Cape summer elegance. Together they sit at VIP tables, in festival chair seating, or camped upon the lawn of the Hyannis Village Green to enjoy this event – one which benefits the arts and creative economy of Cape Cod all year long and exemplifies the mission of the Arts Foundation.

Proceeds from this concert enable the Arts Foundation to fulfill its mission to support, promote, and celebrate the arts and culture of Cape Cod year-round. The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod provides artistic, cultural, and educational programs, collaborative marketing initiatives, arts advocacy, scholarships and a grants program that grants funds to individual artists, arts educators and cultural organizations throughout Barnstable County.

 

Volunteers

The Citizens Bank Pops by the Sea concert would not be possible without the dedication and enthusiasm of volunteers! More than 350 volunteers are required to produce the largest cultural event on Cape Cod. 2016 Volunteer Jobs on both Saturday and Sunday. All volunteers on Sunday are required to wear their Pops T-shirts. Please, no jeans for customer service positions.

Each volunteer receives:

  • An official Pops by the Sea T-Shirt
  • 2 Lawn Tickets to the performance (one for you, one for a friend)
  • light snacks and soft drinks during your shift

Guest Conductors

Every year the concert features a special celebrity guest conductor. Past honorable guests have included Art Buchwald, Blythe Danner, Walter Cronkite, Jim Belushi, Rachael Ray, Maurie Povich, Connie Chung, Maya Angelou, Charlie Gibson, and Mike Wallace. The Guest Conductor for 2016 will be announced soon.


Guest Performers

Another beloved Pops tradition is the guest performers who take the stage for an incredible rendition with the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra. Idina Menzel, Ann Hampton Callaway, Sebastian Bäverstam, Trooper Dan Clark, Kandice Wood, and John Stevens have all joined the concert in past years. The Guest Performer for 2016 will be announced soon.


Opening Acts

Gates for the event open at 1:00 p.m. and our opening acts begin on the side stage at 1:15. As blankets are set and picnic baskets are unloaded across the Hyannis Village Green, patrons enjoy music from local Cape Cod groups of all genres including Bluegrass, Funk, Folk, Blues, Rock and more. Official Artwork & Unveiling

The Citizens Bank Pops by the Sea concert is annually commemorated with the commissioning of a work of art, from which limited edition reprints and posters are created. The original art work is unveiled and auctioned off at a benefit auction and reception held before the concert, with all proceeds benefiting the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod. Limited edition reprints are available for sale during the concert.
