Barnstable Officials Consider the Future of Municipal Recycling

BARNSTABLE – Barnstable Town Manager Mark Ells recently met with members of the town’s Department of Environmental Protection to discuss the future of the recycling industry and what that means for municipal solid waste management.

Town officials are working with communities and vendors to identify markets for various recyclable material, suggesting that the single stream approach is no longer working for the market.

“The recycling market continues to change relevant to solid waste management,” Ells explained, “The lack of a market to dispose of single stream recyclables has made it necessary to resume source separation and modify our operations at the transfer station.”

The issue stems largely from a decision made by the Chinese Government last year to stop importing used plastic and paper, citing environmental concerns.
