Small Business Management Certification Offered to Cape Cod Businesses

HYANNIS – The Cooperative Bank of Cape Cod and SCORE have partnered to offer members of the skilled trade workforce on the Cape an opportunity to earn a certificate in small business management.

“Building Business for the Skilled Trades” is a workshop series designed for contractors, plumbers, electricians and landscapers. The workshop welcomes those who want to take their business to next level to those just starting out.

“Several years ago we started discussing how SCORE, who mentors small businesses on the Cape, can help fill the gap in helping to keep young professionals in skilled trades on the Cape, and also fill the void that will occur when the boomers, who own small businesses, start to retire,” SCORE Official Marc Goldberg explained.

“So, we came up with creating a certificate program in small businesses management for the skilled trades, so that carpenters and plumbers and painters and landscapers were prepared to either start their own businesses, or when the boomers decide they’re ready to move onto the next stage of their life in retirement that they were prepared to acquire businesses that were available.”

The seven part curriculum explores sales and marketing, the competitive environment, organizational tools for functionality and profitability, and financial tools available for small-business. The series is led by veteran business leaders and tradespeople with vast experience in the small business industry.

Chief Commercial Banking Officer at Cooperative Bank of Cape Cod Peter Rice says the bank is “pleased for the opportunity to sponsor such an important training series.”

“It provides valuable education, it helps retain jobs on the Cape, it enables young people to stay in our region in rewarding careers, it maintains critical skills in the trades here on the Cape that benefits us all, and finally, it creates an exit strategy for retiring small business owners rather than simply shutting down their business,” continued Rice.

Classes will be held at Cape Cod Beer in Hyannis from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. on January 7 and 14. Light beverages and dinner will also be offered.

The program fee is $199 with some scholarships available. Classes are limited to 25 participants and enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis. Visit capecod.socre.org to register.

SCORE Cape Cod and the Islands is the non-profit resource partner of the U.S. Small Business Administration with a mission of fostering vibrant small business communities through mentoring and education.
