Cape League Update: Firebirds Win Again

Orleans Firebirds 3

Brewster Whitecaps 0

W: Daniel Lynch (3-0) L: Connor Higgins (1-2) S: Josh Hiatt (5)

The Firebirds have their eyes on a double digit winning streak after their shutout victory over the Whitecaps. Daniel Lynch (UVA) has been nothing short of spectacular to start the summer for the Firebirds improving to 3-0, with a 1.84 ERA. Even more spectacular, in almost 15 innings pitched, Lynch has yet to allow a free pass while striking out 14. Closer Josh Hiatt (UNC) locked down his 5th save of the season and through 7 appearances in 2017, has only allowed 2 hits, 0 runs and has struck out 11. Brewster starter, Connor Higgins (Arizona State) has pitched well for the Whitecaps, holding a 2.74 ERA and threw 5 solid innings last night, but the Brewster bats only managed 3 hits on the game.

Bourne Braves 6

Falmouth Commodores 4

W: Ray Gaither (1-0) L: Matt Mercer (2-1) S: Ryan Feltner (5)

It didn’t take Bourne long to regain its position as leader of the West bouncing back to defeat the Commodores on the road, 6-4. The Braves benefitted from timely hitting up and down the lineup as all but one batter logged a hit and 6 batters registered RBIs on the night. Bourne was in control of the game from start to finish, but nearly let the Commodores back in the game in the bottom of the 8th after a wild pitch and an error led to 2 runs to cut the lead to 6-4. However, the Braves called upon their closer Ryan Feltner (Ohio State) to gum up the leak and he did just that. Feltner notched his 5th save of the season and in 7 appearances has yet to give up a run and holds a 14:2 strikeout to walk ratio.

Harwich Mariners 5

Hyannis Harbor Hawks 4

W: Jake Agnos (1-0) L: Kevin Coulter (0-4) S: Theodore Rodliff (2)

Two teams in need of a win took the field at McKeon Park last night and it was the Mariners that went away on top. The Harbor Hawks, despite solid outings from their pitching staff, couldn’t keep it together in the field registering 5 errors in the game. Errors led to runs in both the 2nd and 5th innings, which, coincidentally were the only innings the Mariners scored. Hyannis mounted a comeback in the bottom of the 6th thanks to RBI singles by Micah Coffey (Minnesota) and Dominic DiCaprio (Rice). Unfortunately for the Harbor Hawks, Theodore Rodliff (Stony Brook) entered the game with some nasty stuff and pitched 3.1 shutout innings to earn his 2nd save of the year.

Cotuit Kettleers 2

Wareham Gatemen 0

W: Zane Collins (3-1) L: Justin Glover (2-1)

Cotuit avenged their shutout defeat at the hands of Wareham with a shutout of their own. So far this season, shutouts have come in the form of a combination of pitchers, but not last night. Wright State’s Zane Collins was dialed in from start to finish registering the first 9 inning complete game shutout of the summer. Collins gave up 6 hits, walked 1 and struck out 8 in what was a masterful performance. Hits in general were at a premium in Wareham. Cotuit received their 2 runs on an error in the 3rd and a pass ball in the 7th. With the win, the Kettleers find themselves above .500 at 10-9 and the Gatemen fall to 8-11.

Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox 0

Chatham Anglers 4

W: Austin Bergner (1-1) L: Hogan Harris (0-1)

Chatham handed the Y-D Red Sox their 2nd shutout loss in a row with a 4-0 decision last night at Veterans Field. UNC freshman, Austin Bergner pitched a gem for 6 innings only allowing 3 hits, striking out 6 while walking none. After a bit of a rough stretch, Nick Patten (Delaware) got the bat working again going 2 for 4 with a run and 2 RBIs. Josh Shaw (St. John’s) also had a great night at the plate going 3 for 4 with a run, a RBI, and a stolen base on the game. Shaw leads the Anglers with a .389 batting average. For Y-D, they’re hoping a little home cookin’ on the 4th of July will wake the bats up when they host Hyannis.

What’s more American than baseball on the 4th of July? Baseball on the 4th of July on Cape Cod!
