CHATHAM – The Chatham Fish Pier is in need of repairs and the town plans to address them all in one article at town meeting.
Projects, which total over $2 million, include repairs and renovations to the observation deck, the bulkhead, a new deck stairway and electrical upgrades.
“We decided that rather than funding them piecemeal we would see if we could get a town meeting authorization for a debt exclusion borrowing authorization so we can fully fund the repairs that are necessary,” said Alix Heilala, the town finance director.
Officials hope to secure the funding for all the projects at one time to prevent some of the projects from getting shelved.
“We can fully fund the repairs that are necessary and then move forward without having to come back to town meeting year after year and run the risk of not getting those in one year as other items in the capital plan take precedent,” Heilala said.
According to Heilala, a 3.75 interest rate over 20 years would result in the average taxpayer, with a home valued at $804,000, to pay an initial increase of $25.50 more in taxes.
