BOSTON (AP) — Officials report the number of Massachusetts residents signing up for coverage through the state’s health insurance marketplace is up about 12 percent from a year ago.
The Connector says more than 290,000 people selected plans during the open enrollment period, ending Jan. 23. Most will have coverage on Feb. 1. Several thousand who selected a plan but haven’t paid yet will have to wait at least until March 1.
Along with a nearly 90 percent retention rate from this time last year, there was a 27 percent increase in new enrollments.
Connector spokesman Jason Lefferts says the just-completed open enrollment period was the smoothest since the Affordable Care Act took effect.
Lefferts says the fact that Massachusetts still requires most adults to carry health insurance helped keep the market stable.
