Cyr to Run for State Senate

Julian CyrBARNSTABLE – Another candidate has thrown his hat in the ring for the Cape and Islands District State Senate seat.

Truro resident and democrat Julian Cyr announced his candidacy Saturday.

Cyr currently serves as director of policy and regulatory affairs for environmental health at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. He said his one of his priorities, if elected, will be affordability.

“We’ve become profoundly unaffordable,” he said. “I’m someone who believes in generational responsibility; I’ve been involved in policy and community organizing both here on the Cape and in Boston working for state government for a number of years.”

State Senator Dan Wolf announced earlier this month that he would not seek re-election in 2016.

Anthony Schiavi, a Harwich republican, announced that was also running for the position shortly after Wolf made his decision.

Under former Governor Deval Patrick, Cyr worked with members of the State Senate as deputy director for government affairs at the Department of Public Health.

Cyr has also served on the Massachusetts Commission on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Questioning Youth since 2011 and is a current board member of Health Imperatives, a nonprofit health and human services agency that provides services to thousands of families and individuals on Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket.

Other Republicans who may be considering a run include Orleans selectman John Hodgson and Ron Beaty, who lost to Wolf in last year’s election.

Potential Democrats include County Commissioner Sheila Lyons and Brewster Selectman Ben deRuyter.

Fourth Barnstable State Representative Sarah Peake, a Democrat, and First Barnstable State Representative Tim Whelan, a Republican, previously said they would not run for the senate seat.

Comments

  1. As a conservative candidate for Republican State Committeeman, Cape & Islands District, it is my viewpoint that the more State Senate candidates, the better (both Democrat and GOP). It provides voters with more choices to select from. RON BEATY

  2. Whoever runs faces “for a day” General Anthony Schiavi. He’s a man with a stellar military career but a man that comes with baggage. He’s placed the town of ashland in turmoil, more than people in the town are aware of at this point. He’s turned his head on an officers sexual assault, re-hired an officer that was terminated after an arbitrator upheld termination and deemed him to be incapable of telling the truth, rehired that officer without placing a condition of waiving rights to a lawsuit and then paid him back pay along with a hefty settlement, has allowed sexual harassment to be overlooked and has waived all town employees indiscretions. The record is clear. This is not the man you want in your office. Schiavi has no experience in office. The better candidate for the cape and islands is Mr Cyr.
