Former Sox GM Duquette Says New Harbor Hawks Field Important for Cape League

HYANNIS – The new Judy Walden Scarafile Field will formally open in less than two months when the Hyannis Harbor Hawks open their 2019 Cape Cod Baseball League Season.

The field at McKeon Park at St. John Paul II High School has been fully refurbished with $700,000 from the town of Barnstable and $100,000 from the Yawkey Foundation.

The main goal of the project was to improve the drainage system at the field.

“It’s important for the Cape to have good facilities to continue to attract the best College baseball players in the country,” said Dan Duquette, a former Red Sox General Manager and guest speaker at the Harbor Hawks Pizza Fest Kick Off event Thursday, April 25.

The event is at Cape Cod Beer in Hyannis from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

Duquette said the field is also important for the community.

“It will be there for the use of St. John Paul and other community ball clubs who want to use it,” Duquette said.

Duquette said the field helps to solidify the Cape League as the preeminent summer college baseball league.

The field is also important for tourism in Hyannis as it is a destination within walking distance from downtown and Hyannis Harbor.

Duquette feels the pride that Cape Cod communities have for their teams is what has helped to make the league so popular for top amateur players.

“I’ve always believed that a baseball team is really a part of a community and the people in the communities down here feel strongly about it and they support it every year,” he said.

Despite the slow start for the Red Sox, Duquette thinks his former team has the talent to turn it around.

“These guys are young so I expect they are going to have another good year,” he said.

Duquette was also the general manager of the Montreal Expos and, most recently, the Baltimore Orioles.

He now lives on Cape Cod with his wife and seven children.

The Pizza Fest event will also include former New England Patriot Garin Veris. He was a defensive end that was named to the Patriots All 80’s Team.
