IFAW to Kick Off New Speaker Series

YARMOUTH PORT – The Yarmouth Port-based International Fund for Animal Welfare, which rescues and protects animals around the world, is kicking off a new speaker series Tuesday afternoon.

Renowned conservationist and author Carl Safina will discuss his new book “Beyond Words: What Animals Think and Feel.”

Safina said he is trying to help people understand that the lives of wild animals are not very different from our own.

“They know where they are. They know who they are. They understand who their friends and enemies are,” Safina said. “They understand where the food is, where the water is and where the shelter is.”

Safina said he went out in the field with some of the greatest wildlife researchers.

“They helped me see how these animals experience life and the kinds of decisions they make and what they do to stay alive and find food and keep their babies alive,” Safina said.

He said many other animals have an ambition for higher status and that their lives also follow a career like humans.

“A lot of people don’t know about how other animals live,” Safina said. “Most people have very little contact with other animals except for possibly dogs and cats.”

The lecture will be followed by a question and answer session, a book signing and a coffee and cookie reception.

The event is at IFAW’s Operations Center on Summer Street in Yarmouth Port from 2 to 5 p.m.

Tickets are $10.
