Massachusetts Marine Killed in Hawaii Being Honored

military graveHINGHAM, Mass. (AP) — Final goodbyes are being given today to a local Marine who died in a helicopter crash in Hawaii earlier this year.

A memorial service for Cpl. Christopher Orlando is scheduled for Friday at St. Paul Catholic Church in Hingham, south of Boston.

The service comes three and a half months after Orlando and 11 other Marines died Jan. 14 in a midair collision of two helicopters during a nighttime training mission off Hawaii’s coast.

The 23-year-old Orlando had been in the Marines more than three years and was stationed at Kaneohe Bay in Hawaii.

Only traces of DNA were found in the recovery effort following the crash.

Friday’s service will include eulogies and a presentation of military honors to his parents. Gov. Charlie Baker is expected to attend.
