Martha’s Vineyard Airport Cleanup Ongoing

MARTHA’S VINEYARD  –  The costs continue to mount for the Martha’s Vineyard Airport as it deals with contaminated residential wells due to airport activities.

Last week, the Airport Commission authorized a $130,000 contract with an environmental firm to deal with the problem, according to the MV Times.

In addition, $120,000 will be spent on testing and remediation measures. A total of 13 wells out of 100 tested were found to have levels of PFAS in excess of safe levels. Most of the wells affected were south of the airport.

The material is contained in firefighting foam used at the airport which migrated into local groundwater.

The Federal Aviation Administration requires use of the foam in dealing with jet fuel spills, the material is also used in training exercises.

Representatives with Tetra Tech, the company hired to do the remediation work, says the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection has approved the plan for remediation.

The material at issue is also found in non-stick coating and waterproof clothing.
