Orleans, Chatham to Collaborate on Outer Beach Access

Nauset BeachCHATHAM – Orleans Selectman John Hodgson spoke during a recent meeting of the Chatham Board of Selectman, seeking cooperation between the two towns in regards to vehicle access on their respective outer beaches.

Piping plover conservation efforts has hindered outer beach access in recent years, however last season Orleans implemented a groundbreaking plan which allowed off-road vehicles access. Due to a lack of cooperation, Chatham was unable to follow suit and Hodgson believes improved communication will allow both towns to allow access.

“We have a very valuable resource out there that our citizens want to use and I think we should be paying more attention to that and the way to do that is more communication,” Hodgson said.

Staffs from each town have held meetings recently, and Chatham’s board unanimously voted to jointly meet with their Orleans counterparts in the near future to forge a plan in regards to beach access for the upcoming season.
